One Last Thought

WWE WrestleMania 28There’s a train of thought that Miz will interfere in the Rock-Cena main event, thus gaining revenge for Rock “ruining” his WrestleMania main event last year, and revenge for being a Mania afterthought this year. If Cena won because Miz did Rock dirty, it might soften the result for Rock fans.
Except it wouldn’t. I’m not sure WWE Universe will riot if Rock loses, but I know it won’t be happy. There’s no way to dilute a Rock loss.
It’s my understanding a finish involving interference by Miz was very seriously considered. Miz whined long and loud about being left out of Mania by way of setting up that finish. But the idea was dismissed out of fear marks would figure it out. Problem is, by staying ahead of the marks, dirt sheets and web sites, WWE creative too often stays ahead of itself.
I would not involve Miz in the finish. Miz simply isn’t a big enough star to be the deciding factor in a “once in a lifetime” match. Rock elevated last year’s Miz-Cena match by getting involved. Miz can’t help this match.
I initially laughed when Rock-Cena was hyped as the “biggest match ever.” That had something of the Tony Schiavone about it.
But you know what? It’s right there. Cena has been on top for seven years, and Rock is one of WWE’s biggest icons, possessing a stardom that goes beyond wrestling thanks to his film career. It’s not quite Rock-Austin, or Hogan-Andre. But it’s a MONSTER, and it seems very personal.
I still can’t pick a winner. But as the day draws closer, I’m leaning more toward Cena. Mania usually sends the fans home happy. But at the end of the day, Vince already has that money. Moving forward, Cena winning is the preferable result. Not what I would do. But try to think like Vince.
I hate three-way matches. But don’t be shocked if Taker beats Triple H, an issue involving HBK is created, and the parties come back for a three-way at next year’s Mania. Taker has to beat two men to keep the streak alive.
